Capturing the Flow of Sensation in Haechan Kang's 'Flowing Moonlight'

Opening on July 3 and running until August 23, UNAW GALLERY in Seoul presents Haechan Kang’s solo exhibition, Flowing Moonlight. The exhibition showcases 31 paintings created over the past three years, alongside new works and previously unseen early drawings and studies.

Haechan Kang is known for his 'sensory painting' style, capturing unseen but tangible elements such as atmosphere, light, and water. His works are not rooted in specific locations but rather evoke the essence of moments through air, temperature, and the density of light, inviting viewers to experience the essence of each moment.

A highlight of the exhibition is Kang's use of interference pigments, which shift in color and sheen based on the viewer's perspective. This optical dynamism transforms his paintings from static representations into flowing transfers of sensation and memory.

In this new artistic exploration, Kang captures everyday transitional times — like the twilight just before night falls completely — overlaying the emotional essence and nostalgia of these moments with layers of paint. This effort represents his attempt to construct landscapes as residues of experience rather than portrayals of physical objects, offering viewers an unfamiliar and fresh dimension of emotion.
