Flowing Moonlight: Sensory Topographies in Time and Memory

This summer, the UNAW Gallery in Seoul proudly presents Haechan Kang’s solo exhibition, Flowing Moonlight, a showcase of 31 works that paint an atmospheric narrative from the sultry air of summer nights to the crisp traces of winter evenings. Kang’s practice captures light, air, and water, materializing the often unnoticed layers of sensation into visual form.

Rather than depict specific locations, Kang captures moments—concentrations of air, temperature, and light. This approach moves beyond traditional landscape painting, transforming the perceived flow of sensation into a visual field where the immaterial finds expression.

A Visual Experiment in Sensory Transition

A hallmark of Kang’s work is his use of interference pigments, which subtly alter in color and sheen with the viewer’s perspective. This creative use acts as a metaphor for the temporal and emotional fluidity inherent in his paintings, portraying scenes as transitions rather than static images. Kang builds his works through the gradual application of fine layers of paint, crafting spaces defined by translucency and depth, inviting the viewer into a complex sensory experience.
