UNAW GALLERY is delighted to present Flowing Moonlight, a solo exhibition by Haechan Kang, from July 3 to August 23, 2025. This exhibition brings together Kang’s essential works and new paintings exploring the atmospheric shifts of summer nights and winter evenings. Moving beyond traditional representation, Kang foregrounds painting as a field of perception—an accumulation of light, air, and time.

Kang constructs sensory topographies that evoke not specific places, but the texture of moments—humidity in the air, the density of dusk, the glimmer of distant windows. His works exist within the interstices of perception, translating fleeting sensations into painterly surfaces.

A defining feature of this exhibition is Kang’s use of interference pigments. These materials, which change color and sheen depending on the viewer's position, visually symbolize the emotional and temporal fluidity engaged in his work. His technique emphasizes building subtle modulations of light and depth by slowly layering thin sheets of acrylic paint, creating atmosphere without sacrificing immediacy.

Recurring motifs—such as branches, silhouettes, and facades—serve as perceptual echoes rather than symbols. They trace the residue of lived experience instead of depicting concrete scenes. Departing from the tradition of romantic landscape, Kang's work aligns with a contemporary exploration of painting bridging the visible and the felt.

Instead of offering fixed images, the exhibition proposes painting as an ambient structure, one that drifts between perception and memory. Kang’s surfaces do not narrate but resonate, inviting viewers to inhabit the work and attune themselves to subtle shifts in light, rhythm, and temporality.

By emphasizing the immaterial qualities of perception—moisture, air, warmth—Kang redefines the boundaries of landscape as a genre. His paintings become slow recordings of sensory time, gently guiding us to return to the overlooked thresholds of daily life: twilight, stillness, and the moments before disappearance.
