Haechan Kang’s Poetic Painting: Elevating Layers of Sensation

From July 3 to August 23, 2025, UNAW GALLERY presents a remarkable exhibition, Flowing Moonlight. This exhibition highlights the artistic journey of Haechan Kang over the past three years, offering visitors a new dimension to experience sensory landscapes.

Kang’s work surpasses traditional landscape painting by visually exploring layers of sensation. His canvases capture not a specific location but the density of air, temperature, and light at a given moment. This approach eloquently reveals sensations that lie beyond the edges of perception.

In Flowing Moonlight, interference pigments that shift in color and sheen with different angles are utilized to emphasize a passage rather than a fixed image, accentuating the transient nature of sensation. This technique invites a multilayered perceptual experience, urging viewers to awaken dormant senses within.

Haechan Kang draws inspiration from often-overlooked moments of daily life—times like twilight just before darkness fully sets in—to artistically capture the ambient air and lighting of the day. This represents an experimental endeavor in how painting can manifest the invisible sensations.

His work can be interpreted as an attempt to construct landscapes as residues of sensory experiences. Recurring silhouettes of natural and architectural forms act as markers of perception, bearing emotional weight.
